Jo Leinen at the Europa-Institut, Business Section

It was our pleasure to receive Jo Leinen, Member of the European Parliament, on Friday, January 26th, 2018 in the rooms of our Europa-Institut. His short presentation “European Union: Facing challenges and looking ahead” was part of the course “European Institutions” held by Prof. Dr. Axt and offered our MBA students the opportunity to get a first-hand insight into European politics.

After having served as Saarland’s State Minister of the Environment between 1985 and 1994, Jo Leinen became the chairman of the European Affairs Committee of the Saarland’s State Parliament between 1994 and 1999. Furthermore, he was member of the European Union’s Committee of the Regions and of the Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of the Council of Europe from 1995 to 1999. Since 1999, Jo Leinen has been Member of the European Parliament and he is currently the President of the European Parliament’s Delegation for relations with the People’s Republic of China.

In his presentation, Jo Leinen explained the current challenges faced by the European Union, for instance, managing the consequences of Brexit, stabilizing the Euro-zone, solving internal and external security issues or responding to the demand of digitalisation. Considering these vast challenges, he named 2018 a crucial year for the future development of the European Union. Meanwhile, he stressed clearly the value of peace, stability and high living standards as key achievements of the European Union.

After the presentation, the MBA students took advantage of the opportunity to ask questions and to exchange their points of view.

The presentation and the following discussion were an altogether enriching experience and we sincerely thank Jo Leinen for his visit!
