Health Insurance

Health insurance is compulsory for students in Germany. You will therefore need to provide proof of health insurance cover before you enrol at the university.

Students who already have statutory health insurance from an EU member state can use their EHIC card or a substitute certificate for enrolment. Students from countries with which the Federal Republic of Germany has a social security agreement are required to bring the appropriate form from their health insurance provider. When you present a form or a EHIC from your home country to the office of a German statutory health insurance office, you will be issued with a certificate of valid insurance that you can then present to the University.

Students from countries outside the EU need to purchase student health insurance cover from a health insurance provider in Germany. This can either be statutory health insurance or a German private health insurance. Students over 30, students in the German course at the Studienkolleg or PhD students will have to get a private health insurance. While the statutory health insurance is a bit more expensive, it also gives you broader coverage in the case of medical assistance.

There are three statutory health insurance providers on campus and some others in the city. If necessary, the Welcome Center can point you in the right direction.
